  • How useful you feel the module in Systems Analysis has been to you? Give reasons.

I think that the System Analyst module have been useful to me because it has shown how a system analyst works. From the module I learnt some of the skills technique that systems analysts use. It think it has given me a good insight into the career in system analyst and how a lot of businesses use them.

  • Do you think that all Compuing and IT courses should have a module in Systems Analysis? Why?

I think that it is a useful module in Computing and ICT courses because all computers uses  a system and in the workplace most have some type of system so it is good to know how a system is thought of and made and at some point a System analyst will be needed.

  • Given that most managers use IT systems in their daily work and often are involved in requesting new IT systems. Do you think that it would be useful if courses in Business and Management included a module in Systems Analysis? Why?

I think this would be useful because for someone taking a Business and Management course who wants to pursue a career in management they would need to know how a system analyst works and how they go about updating and creating a new system.

  • What topics did you find most useful in the Systems Analysis module? Why?

I think the most useful topic in the module was DFD diagrams because it show the flow of data in the company. This was also a useful topic because DFDs can be used in other computing modules and is useful to know them.  I found that all the topics were useful in some way to help me understand the module.

Task 1

Problems that may accrue when using written communication to communicate a complex analysis or design details is that it may be written in a way that is too complicated for users to understand. For example the user may need it to be explained in another way that they might understand than the way that is written.

Another problem may be that for the end user it might not have been explained well enough as it could be in person making it very difficult to work out what is written. If it is being explained to you in person it makes it easier to understand and if you don’t understand you can ask questions. With written communication you cant.

Another problem might be that it isn’t written in enough detail, so for example a designer might no have nearly enough detail to be any use to them.

For the end user this also could be a problem because there isn’t enough detail that they are looking for or if there is too much information it will be difficult to understand.

Another problem may be that the information given isn’t accurate which would be no use for the end user or a designer. If the information is passed verbally they can insure they get all the information they need.

Above is a link to the questionnaire that I made to give to people at Jordanstown. I started the questionnaire with a question to find out who the person was i.e. student or lecturer. This will show me what different people think of the idea of Emma’s business. Then I went on to ask questions about where on campus do they normally eat and how much they would tend to spend. This will give me an idea of what customers are paying other businesses and what they are going to be willing to pay of their lunch. I then asked questions about what they usually eat for lunch and if there was anything they would like businesses to sell. This lets me see what is most popular on campus with different people and lets me see what new food Emma’s business could bring to the campus. I then asked what they of a café specializing in vegetarian food opening on campus and if they thought it would be successful. This will give me an idea of the customer’s opinions of the business and if it is really needed at Jordanstown.
A lot of my questions were multiple choice and the person had to choose one answer. This meant it gave me a more accurate answer to the question and makes it a lot easier to analyses.
The layout of my questionnaire was:
Who was the customer?
Where and what they ate on campus?
How much they spent on lunch?
What they thought of the Emma’s business?
All the questions I asked I think are needed to help us analysis if the business is needed at Jordanstown and if it would succeed.

Part 2
To find out what people really eat on campus I would need to do some observation. I could spend a week observing people at Jordanstown. The best times for me to do this would be in the morning before nine, before lectures start, Lunch time 12-2pm this being the busiest time for the businesses at Jordanstown and late afternoon before students are going home. I would do this for a week because some days can be busier on campus than other so just observing one day wouldn’t be accurate. It would be hard for me to get round all the business looking at one time so I would have to for example spend the morning at the mail, then lunchtime in the students union. I would have to change about on different days in different places. A problem I might come across is that it will be difficult to do it on my own as it is that busy I would need a team of people to help me as the areas like the Mail are quite big and would be difficult to analysis on my own. Also for example some Mondays could be busier than other so I might not get an accurate idea of what that day is like.

ABC Bakeries

I am going to do an Economic feasibility study on ABC Bakeries to see whether a new online system will be beneficial to the company. To do this I will need to look at certain areas off the business and gather information.
• I need to find if the website is really what the company needs and if it will be beneficial to the company.
• I will need to find out exactly what the company wants the website to be able to do and what information they want the site to display.
• I need to find out what they want they website to look like because it needs to reflect the company’s corporate image.
• I will need to find out how the company want to get the products to the customer – are they going to have a delivery service or collection only
• I will need to know when the company want the website to be ready so that I can plan the project.
• I will need to find out how they are going to package their goods for customer and what this will cost.
• I will need to arrange regular meeting with the Manager of ABC Bakeries to help me gather this information and keep them up to date with any progress.

To create the website I will need to gather relevant information from ABC bakeries as to what will be put on the site and ensure it is accurate information.
• Ensure I have correct information about the business such as mission statement, background info about the business, opening hours, contact numbers,
• Does the company want the customer to be able to leave feedback.
• Ensure I have the correct list of products that they want to make available online.
• Limits on how much a person can order, or how much they have to order.
• Ensure I have the correct prices for products.
• Ensure I have pictures of the products so the customer can see what they are getting.
• Any special online offers.
• If there will be a delivery service, will there be a charge for the service.
• What the company’s Terms and Conditions are – refunds, damaged products.

To gather the above information I will use different methods such as interviews and questionnaires. This will help me get the information I need and ensure I have accurate information to help me meet the company’s specification.

Enrolment Process

When enrolling to the Computer Science course I enrolled online because I attended the university last year so I had my student number and student card. This meant I was able to enrol for the course from home.
Before the start of semester one the university’s Administration Office sent me an email reminding me that I had to enrol for the course and that I was able to do this online. In the email there was a link that took me to the Online Enrolment System. On this page I chose that I was a returning student. This brought up a page showing guild lines on how to enrol. From here a clicked on a link that took me to a login page where I entered my login details. You needed your Student Number and you Pin which was your date of birth. When I got logged in used the course code to find my course and selected it. This enrolled me in the course. If I had tried to log in again it would display a message saying I was not able to enrol because I had already enrolled for the academic year. This is good because it will only let one Student Number enrol one which would help stop any errors and stop confusion.

I thought this enrolment process worked well and was a lot easier than having to manually enrol at the university because it saved time as there no queues and you were able to enrol whenever you wanted . I found the system very easy to use and I think if it was some one who only had basic computer skills they would still find it easy enough to use because it guides you through and tells you what you need to do. I think it is a well designed interface, and is made very easy for anyone to use.
